SALVE 101

SALVE 101

So, we bet you have questions like: What is a salve? Do you pronounce the ‘l’? What’s the difference between a salve and a lotion? What is Green Goo? Seems like a weird name. You got me to your surprisingly lovely website, but I need answers!

First off, we’re here – like, actual humans are available. Feel free to email us, find us on social media, or give us a call. Our blog has some answers too and there’s our FAQ, but if you’re like us and you still enjoy talking to folks who are curious like you – contact us. We’d love to help.

Now then, what is a salve? To put it simply, a salve is a mixture of oils, herbs, and beeswax. That’s really it. Balms seem to be a close cousin and tend to be a little firmer. Butters have less wax and are made from cocoa butter, shea butter, etc. so they’re less firm. We wouldn’t take this information down to the farmer’s market and start a fight with your local ointment artisan. Different people have different feelings about where the boundaries lie, but as a general rule of thumb we feel pretty good about it.

We say you can pronounce salve with the ‘l’ or not. We’ve seen it both ways. Merriam Webster says either is fine. You do you. If you run in to any trouble, you tell them Webster and the Green Goo Crew said it was cool. That should back most street toughs down. We’ve got cred. Well, Webster does anyway.

The big difference between salves and lotions is that salves, like we said before, are made from oils and wax, where lotions are made from alcohol and water. It might seem like a small thing, but the difference can be huge to your skin. A lotion might feel good going on, but they don’t penetrate as well. Alcohol actually dries your skin and the water in lotions can evaporate, taking your skin’s natural oils with it. Guess what that means? More dryness.

Our salves penetrate, moisturize, and protect your skin. Each one is specially formulated with organic herbs and oils to address the many different types of skin issues you might be encountering. If you have dry skin or eczema, we have a salve for that. If you’ve got a cut or scrape, we’ve got one for that too. The list goes on and on. You’re here on the site. Check it out. Chances are, we’ve got you covered. (That’s a salve joke…sorry.)

Green Goo is our name. It’s a direct reference to salves we make that are slightly green. We think it’s a bit goofy too, but what’s a google or a pinterest? Our salves used to be called Sierra Sage. That’s still our company name, but we thought the salves could use a little fun and so Green Goo was born. We also like the connection to our GooRu. It reminds us to stay humble, to keep learning, and to be mindful that there is always more work to do, to get to where we want to be.

Thanks for being curious. If you have more questions, let us know.
